Like Nesbit’s Railway Children, the story begins when a group of children move from London to the countryside of Kent. Readers will love this optimistic and lively tale of good intentions gone hilariously awry. The young narrator’s identity is kept a secret, inviting the reader to deduce which of the intrepid Bastable children is the story-teller as they set off to restore their family’s fallen fortunes. The book is the first in a five-piece series called The Bastables Series, based around the six Bastable children: Dora, Oswald, Dicky, Alice, Noel, and Horace Octavius H.O. ‘The Story of the Treasure Seekers’ was Nesbit’s first novel, published in 1899, and set a new precedent for English children’s literature. Many of Nesbit’s works have been adapted for film and plays, and her popular fantasy stories set the standard for modern children’s writers like J. Edith Nesbit 1858-1924 was an English author and poet who wrote and collaborated on over 60 books of children’s fiction, and is considered today to be one of the founders of modern children’s literature.

Each letter accompanies a box full of objects that narrates the progress of their relationship, and is returned to Ed at the end of the letter. She tells why they broke up and why their romance, which defied the very laws of high school hierarchy, was torn apart and ruined, despite its prior perfection. I loved that the book is told from the perspective of Min as she writes Ed a letter, pouring her heart out and analyzing everything that went wrong in their relationship. They are different and as a result, their relationship is unexpected. Ed is obsessed with basketball and swoon-worthy. Min, the enigmatic protagonist is obsessed with old movies and wants to become a director. Why We Broke Up is a story about the relationship between Min Green and Ed Slaterton, a high school junior and senior basketball jock. It started transforming into a deep and provocative look into relationships, the cracks that form even from the beginning, the lies we pretend not to see, and the desperation we hold on to. Somewhere in the middle, this book stopped being about Min and started being about me or my friends or my family. It is not a book I normally would enjoy and for much of this novel I was rather indifferent to it, but somewhere in the middle that all changed. Why We Broke Up made me recall my own past, my own stupidity, my own mistakes, and my own high school traumas. I just hope kids find it to be a fast-paced, funny story. It touches on stuff like rounding up and down, and even/odd numbers (and the fact that the number eight resembles a snowman). Sure, Zero the Hero subtly teaches place-holding and arithmetic operations like addition and subtraction. They’ll likely want the story to entertain them, make them root for the characters, and wonder how it will all turn out. Young readers won’t necessarily pick up this picture book to learn math facts. In this kind of “faction” (a blend of fiction and fact), the fiction component is always paramount. Lucky thing, because the manuscript hit my editor’s desk just as she was working with a wonderful New York Times-bestselling artist named Tom Lichtenheld, who agreed to illustrate it. But it took me about five years to actually finish writing a book about him. I immediately visualized Zero as an underdog math superhero, complete with cape. This is the second book in this Not This series, and while it can technically can be read as a stand alone, I wouldn’t recommend it. You can be bad ass without having had to fight for every scrap, and not need to be saved me a millionaire man… Betty is also kick ass and awesome, but I am starting to wonder if all of the heroines in this series are bad ass ladies because they’re poor as dirt and have had to fight tooth and nail to survive. I also love a romance where the male lead is all in and is all about wooing his lady love, and not in a gross forceful alpha-hole way but in this delicate dance like he knows if he moves too fast he’s going to scare her off so he slowly feeds her hot dogs and breakfast burritos and gets her animal rescue a spot at his orphanage fundraiser and stuff.Īfter Ryota giving the wolf shifters a bit of a bad rep in Not His Dragon, I loved getting to read more about Ken (who is like the Good Boy Next Door) and a different view on the wolf pack (and on Ryota too). I suppose to give credit where credit is due, Shane East’s marvelous narration and Saskia Maarleveld’s adept one were also partly responsible for my above average enjoyment of this title. Bay’s writing style which kept me glued to my earbuds as I listened. Though I must admit that there weren’t any ground-breaking twists or turns to this story, and in fact the plot is pretty straight-forward, there was just something enigmatically pleasing and addicting to Ms. Bay’s writing style, and the general topic of this story, reminded me a lot of Emma Chase, especially her Royally series. In the end, I found this story to be a quick, fun, romantic listen. I had been hearing great things about Louise Bay’s romances, so I decided to dive in and give Duke of Manhattan a shot.
